Screening and Education on the Prevention of Non-Communicable Disease Complications in the Elderly

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among the elderly. Complications from NCDs often occur due to the lack of awareness among older adults in performing early detection and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This community service activity aimed to empower the elderly through health screening and education on the prevention of NCD complications. The activity was conducted at Posyandu Lansia Anggrek, Mautapaga Village, within the working area of Puskesmas Kota Ende in June 2025. The methods included screening for blood pressure, blood glucose, and body mass index, followed by interactive health education covering healthy diet, physical activity, and medication adherence. Evaluation was carried out through observation and pre–post knowledge tests. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score of the elderly from 62.5 to 85.7 after the educational session, along with greater participation in regular health monitoring. This program successfully improved awareness and capacity of the elderly in preventing NCD complications and strengthened the role of Posyandu as a community-based health empowerment center for older adults
